The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association has announced that it aims to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by an additional 80 per cent on the current air pollution standards for trucks in the EU.

Over the last decade, emissions produced by commercial vehicles have fallen significantly, the association claimed, stating that the most advanced vehicles available produce 75 per cent less nitrogen oxide than trucks manufactured in the early 1990s.

Speaking at the Commercial Vehicle conference in Brussels, Aad L Goudriaan, chairman of the commercial vehicles board at the association, said that the industry wanted to make a "long-term commitment" to helping the environment.

"Our efforts will reduce emission levels from trucks to the most ambitious level possible and result in a substantial contribution to further improving air quality," he remarked.

In related news, Christopher Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, recently reported that commercial vehicle production "recovered" last month due to high levels of demand.
