Consumers doing their Christmas shopping over internet could be compromising their security, retail insurance holders have been told.

Research from PayPal found that almost 27 million people in the UK will do their Christmas shopping online, but just one in seven insist on buying from a trusted retail insurance holder.

In addition, the study showed that 62 per cent believe that finding the best bargain should be their main concern, while 31 per cent are looking for a retail insurance holder who offers free delivery.

Garreth Griffith, head of risk and security at PayPal, said: “Shoppers will be able to get some great bargains online this Christmas but there is no need to sacrifice security in the hunt for a great deal."

The organisation pointed out that online security can be provided by using the latest versions of internet browser and only entering financial details onto secure websites.

Earlier this month, the British Retail Consortium claimed that 70 per cent of consumers have changed their spending habits in light of the ongoing economic crisis.
