A leading organisation is calling on car insurance holders to take part in retraining schemes to brush up on their skills.
Jo Stagg, media representative for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), claims taking part in these initiatives allows motorists to overcome bad habits they have developed.
She says car insurance owners not only put themselves at risk by exceeding the legal speed limits but also by driving incorrectly for the weather conditions.
A number of drivers are ignorant about the speed limit and the reasons why it is set at a given level and this could affect insurance premiums, she warns.
Ms Stagg comments: "With education, training and publicity, drivers will learn that they can actually drive their car efficiently within a 30mph limit."
The Association of British Insurers' media relations officer, Malcolm Tarling, claims any attempt to educate car insurance holders about the risks of speeding is a positive thing.
