An indication by the government that it is not planning to introduce further business regulation has been welcomed by one industry body.

Speaking to the Fabian Society, John Hutton, secretary of state for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, stated that increased red tape is not the way to improve standards in business.

Commenting on the speech Chris Hannant, head of policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: "Mr Hutton's comments today will be applauded by the business community.

"The vast majority of workplace issues can already be resolved between employer and employee with a bit of commonsense and without the need for further regulation."

The government should instead focus it efforts on ensuring that current regulations are better enforced, Mr Hannant added.

However, Trades Union Congress general secretary Brendan Barber disputes the claims.

According to the Guardian, he as dismissed the suggestion that current regulation is "fit for purpose".
