Business insurance holders are operating under a "cloud of disbelief" when they ignore security issues, an expert asserts.
Mike Spinney, senior privacy analyst at the Ponemon Institute, claims these firms are burying their heads in the sand by failing to acknowledge the risk presented by employees stealing data.
He states that many of these companies take steps to tackle the problem only after it occurs, when preventative action could have stopped it taking place initially.
Calling on business insurance holders to do more to protect the sensitive data they control, he says introducing strategies such as data use policies can help with the issue.
Mr Spinney recommends: "Engage employees on such policies through educational and awareness programmes and invest in the technologies that can allow a company to monitor, enforce, prevent, and protect."
Last month, the Ponemon Institute published a study claiming 59 per cent of workers who lost or left their job in 2008 admitted to stealing confidential information.
