More business insurance holders are restricting their workers' access to social networking websites, it has been claimed.

Research conducted by ScanSafe found that there has been a 20 per cent rise in the number of business insurance customers blocking access to these platforms in the past six months.

The survey discovered that 76 per cent of firms now forbid their employees from accessing social networking sites, making it a more common restriction than online shopping, webmail and sports.

Spencer Parker, director of product management at ScanSafe, claimed that business insurance holders originally used web filtering technologies to tackle problems such as discrimination and illegal activities, but they have began to expand its use.

"In recent months, employers are obviously wising up to the dangers and negative impact on productivity linked to certain sites and more and more of our customers have chosen to block social networking," he explained.

Recently, Nebulas Solutions Group and Breach Security revealed that social networking websites are the most popular target of hackers, accounting for 19 per cent of all attacks.
