Retail insurance holders' packaging does not always cause waste, it has been suggested.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) pointed out that the Local Government Association has recently called on supermarkets to publish their packaging statistics, but said the organisation should collaborate more with the industry.

Jane Milne, environment director of the BRC, claimed that retail insurance customers already use the minimum packaging material necessary.

"Supermarkets, and an increasing number of manufacturers, are working to optimise their use of packaging," she explained.

Ms Milne also said the retail insurance holders already provide data on their packaging to the Waste and Resources Action Programme, while action under last year's Courtauld Agreement halted the growth of packaging in the grocery sector.

Furthermore, the expert suggested that publishing packaging information would "demonise" large retail insurance customers, as they use more because they sell greater numbers of products.

Last month, the BRC announced that a new universal label is to be launched in the UK by some retail insurance holders, which will identify products that are suitable for recycling.
