Business insurance customers are risking their family lives, health and marriages to keep their companies afloat, new research has found.

Two-thirds of business insurance customers surveyed by the Employment Law Advisory Services (ELAS) said they are devoting "significantly" more time to working.

A third of business insurance customers said they are putting in a 50-60 hour week while six per cent said they are spending over 100 hours at work.

More than half of the 2,000 bosses polled said their long working hours are affecting their family life and health, with some saying it had led to a marriage break-up.

"We know of several business leaders working 16 or even 18 hours a day - six or seven days a week. The risks they run are obvious," Peter Mooney, head of consultancy at ELAS told the Press Association.

Meanwhile, the organisation has warned businesses to beware staff defrauding on expenses to raise spare cash in the credit crunch.

Legal experts said they have seen a 36 per cent rise in enquires about fiddled expense accounts in recent months.
