SMEs across the country could be set for a training boost with the announcement that the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has signed up to the government's skills pledge.

David Frost, director-general of the BCC, signed the pledge which commits the body to supporting its employees in gaining the skills and qualifications they need.

Commenting on the event, John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, said: "With over 3.3 million employees nationwide covered by skills pledge, we're making great progress - but we need to do more at a local and regional level and encourage further involvement from SMEs.

"I'm therefore extremely pleased that British Chambers of Commerce are joining our drive to boost skills levels."

The BCC will now promote the skills pledge to chamber members across the UK through a series of regional road shows.

Last week, the Working for a Healthier Tomorrow report urged SMEs to invest in a healthy work force, saying that those who do so will reap many benefits.
