Banks are among the biggest barriers to the growth of small firms, according to a new survey.

In news which might interest business insurance customers, a study by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) shows that people are having more problems accessing funding.

Dr Gary Packham, who helped put the report together, said: "These findings illustrate that action must be taken immediately for small businesses to gain access to vital funds to ensure their growth and survival."

Small firms are the backbone of the UK economy, employing 13.5 million people and providing 50 per cent of the nation's turnover, he added.

This makes it even more vital that the sector receives the support it needs, Dr Packham stated.

Yesterday, the Forum of Private Business urged the government to introduce guidelines on payment terms to stop larger firms making unilateral changes to the time period over which they can settle bills with small suppliers.ADNFCR-873-ID-18865201-ADNFCR
