Financial support from banks to small business insurance holders is improving, it has been claimed.

David Dooks, statistics director at the British Banking Association (BBA), made the comments after figures from the organisation showed lending rose by £366 million last month.

The BBA's data also showed that 49,579 new relationships were formed with small business insurance customers in June, something which Mr Dooks believes is evidence that lenders are helping as much as they can.

"These figures provide more evidence of the high street banks' support for small businesses. Structured-term lending rose by £366 million in June, while deposits and numbers of new business relationships continued to hold up," he stated.

Mr Dooks added that the statistics could be evidence that business confidence in trading conditions is improving.

His comments come after chancellor Alistair Darling said he was concerned that the country's major lenders were making access to finance particularly difficult for small business insurance customers through high costs.
