The bad winter weather has once again highlighted the importance of business insurance to protect against business disruption.

As the festive season approaches, heavy snow and ice has slowed deliveries, and with more on the way some retailers have stopped taking online orders.

Some of the UK's biggest supermarket chains have said they have a backlog of orders to fill in Scotland, where conditions have been particularly hazardous.

As a result, they are not taking any new ones, insisting they cannot guarantee that goods will arrive in time for Christmas Day.

Both Tesco and Sainsbury's said that while grocery orders would still be processed, orders for non-food items would be halted until further notice.

The suspensions affect Scotland and some parts of northern England, and could have a major impact on retail profits in the run up to Christmas.

Indeed, research by Barclaycard shows that retailers are in for a sales boost over the coming week, with spending totalling almost £50 billion between now and December 25th.

Those unable to fulfil orders could find themselves missing out on this mini spending boom.
