Retail insurance holders may be interested to know that sales rose by 6.6 per cent in March.

This compared with an increase of 0.6 per cent for the previous month, but Stephen Robertson, director-general of the British Retail Consortium, noted that Easter had warped these figures.

Research carried out by his company along with KPMG found that the retail insurance holders recorded their best total sales growth since April 2006, while values for last month rose 4.4 per cent on a like-for-like basis from March 2009.

Helen Dickinson, head of retail at KPMG, remarked that consumers are still concerned, which is making the outlook for spending gloomy.

"Retailers are fighting hard to encourage shoppers and offer value, which has slowed the rise in shop prices over the month," she added.

It was recently suggested by Jemma Smith, head of public relations at UK Payments, that retail insurance holders should not worry about using chip and pin services.
