Owners of cafes, bistros and takeaways may be reviewing their restaurant insurance needs as they experience a lull in customer demand.
According to a survey by the financial price comparison website Gocompare.com, six out of ten UK consumers are cutting down on meals out to save money.
Instead they are choosing to cook their own meals at home.
Some 38 per cent also said they were buying less food from cafes and restaurants at lunchtime and making their own packed lunches to take to work.
The latest Eating Out in the UK report by Allegra Strategies also showed that the amount people are spending on restaurant meals and takeaways is falling as consumers tighten their belts.
If the trend continues, restaurant owners could be in for a tough time during the coming months or even years.
Taking out restaurant insurance could provide peace of mind by covering against business interruption, loss of liquor licence or loss of accounts receivable, for example.
