A number of small businesses with more than one commercial holding are feeling the brunt of the slowdown in the UK economy.

Last week, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) revealed that pubs, off-licences, bookshops, electrical retailers and travel shops are all falling in number.

It was found that businesses with more than one store or pub are feeling the worst of the slowdown of the UK economy, with 14 shops closing each day in 2011.

In connection with the Local Data Company, it was found that there was a -0.25 per cent decrease in the number of multiple retailers in the country, which amounts to a net reduction of 174 stores.

Mike Jervis, PwC insolvency partner and retail specialist, said: "A common feature of retailers in distress who we are dealing with is that they have too many locations.

"Relatively long leases have been entered into in a growth phase of the economy which are no longer appropriate."

He added that businesses renting commercial properties that are struggling to pay their rent should try and reach a solution in conjunction with the landlord rather than end up in conflict with them.

Pubs and bars are one of the main groups facing the brunt of the slowdown in the economy, with those with more than one commercial holding more likely to experience a closure.

In these tough economic times, landlords and pub owners with more than one branch may like to take out pub insurance to cover any losses they may incur in the current climate.

Pubs in particular may be affected by the Olympics in a negative way, which may make them even more vulnerable if they do not plan ahead.

While business may be fuelled by the Games, there is widespread concern that venues may face a shortage of doorstaff, as workers may be lured away by short-term lucrative contracts over the duration of the tournament, the Publican reported.ADNFCR-873-ID-801296935-ADNFCR
