Motorists are being reminded to check weather forecasts and prepare their vehicles before setting out on the roads this weekend.

The Met Office has forecast a return of freezing weather conditions, with snow expected to fall in some areas.

In response, the Highways Agency is urging drivers to take extra care and to plan their journeys in detail, leaving extra time if possible.

The group said its winter fleet would be treating motorways and other strategic rounds "around the clock" during the coming cold snap.

However, it cautioned: "There is still a need to drive with care, even after road surfaces have been treated with salt and are clear of snow."

The agency also advised motorists to keep emergency packs in their vehicles, containing items such as warm clothing, food, water, de-icer, a torch and a shovel in case they encounter adverse weather conditions on their journey.

Met Office severe weather warnings for widespread icy roads are in place across most of the UK today (December 16th) and tomorrow.

Businesses may therefore wish to review their van insurance policies to make sure they have adequate cover in case of accidents or emergencies.
