There was chaos on the roads of Scotland and the north of England yesterday (December 8th) as the UK was hit by a hurricane-force storm, with wind speeds topping 165 miles per hour in the Cairngorm mountains.

The high wind speeds shut all major road bridges in Scotland and the police issued travel warnings.

Deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon asked people to consider their travel plans.

"I would urge all members of the public to continue to take care and heed advice from police and travel authorities," she said.

However, this did not stop a number of accidents occurring and among those were several incidents involving commercial vehicles.

On the A737 near Dalry, North Ayrshire, an empty school bus was blown over by the force of the wind and the road was closed while rescuers attempted to recover the vehicle.

In response to the danger, First Glasgow took all double-decker buses off the road.

In another incident involving a large vehicle, which just goes to demonstrate the incredible power of the winds yesterday, a lorry cab and its trailer were flipped onto their sides on the M9 in Bewbridge and came to rest on the central reservation.

On the A66 between Cumbria and County Durham, a small lorry suffered the same fate and the front of the vehicle was torn off on the central barriers of the road, the Metro reports.

Commercial vehicle insurance covers for issues such as vehicle damage, injury and legal claims arising as the result of accidents and claims are sure to rise in the aftermath of yesterday's unprecedented conditions.

Although the worst of the wind has subsided, Ms Sturgeon is still urging drivers to take care.

"Contractors are working hard to resolve remaining issues on our roads and with power supplies. I would urge all members of the public to continue to take care and heed advice from police and travel authorities," she said. ADNFCR-873-ID-801235157-ADNFCR
