Firms with business insurance may be interested to hear companies that employ staff with foreign language skills could prove to be successful in the international trading arena, according to one expert.

Teresa Tinsley, director of communications at CILT, The National Centre for Languages, said: "It's about getting a competitive edge, being able to forge relationships with your customers, understanding the markets that you are dealing with and for all those things it's really important to use languages."

She added employees can be more attractive to businesses if they already have foreign language skills at their disposal, as they make them increasingly employable individuals.

Firms which have staff spending significant periods of time working abroad may be in need to specific business insurance to ensure their activities are covered.

Ms Tinsley's comments come in response to recent figures from the National Centre for Languages, which show nearly 300 of Britain's top employers have signed up to a campaign to make young people more employable by adding a foreign language to their CV.

Some 43 per cent of recruiters stated the ability to speak a second language gives candidates a better chance of securing a job than those who are only able to speak their native tongue.
