Firms may be reminded of the need to have business insurance in place after a bookkeeper at a golf club has been jailed for stealing thousands of pounds from its members.

Susan Cameron was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court after it was revealed she had stolen £43,000 from Tyneside Golf Club's 500 members, the Evening Chronicle reports

The court heard how over a four-year period Cameron had taken cash from the safe and failed to deposit club funds into the bank, using such money to pay for holidays and work off mounting credit card debts.

"In any small business losing £43,000 would have an adverse effect. It has been a severe blow to our development plans," Geoff White, former captain of the club, told the publication, in comments that could remind firms of the need to have comprehensive business insurance in place.

Vice-president George Ryder adds her crime represents "a serious breach of trust over a prolonged period of time".

Recruitment Society chair Steve Huxham recently advised now is the time for firms to take out a greater level of business insurance in order to protect themselves from criminal activity carried out by workers.ADNFCR-873-ID-800056359-ADNFCR
