Insurers must be kept informed on homeworkers

Small employers worried about homeworkers injuring themselves should make sure that they are covered by their business insurance, one expert has warned.

Linda Devereux, director of the National Group on Homeworking, explained that most policies cover such workers, but companies should keep their insurers fully informed.

She said: "So long as the insurer's totally aware of all the different circumstances of their employees, they should be able to incorporate that within the policy.

"But it is totally reliant on the employer giving all the relevant information to their insurer."

This also applies to staff who are working on-site, as drivers or in other similar roles which require them to work away from the premises, she added.

Under the Employers' Liability (Compulosry Insurance) Act (1969) the majority of employers in the UK must insure against liability for any instances of injury or disease to which arises through people working for them.
