Energy firms 'failing SMEs'

Energy firms are failing to provide businesses with a fair service, according to one industry body.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), believes that firms are not treated in the same way as domestic customers.

David Frost, director-general of the body, said: "With the economy slowing and energy bills on the rise, it is totally unacceptable that hard pressed businesses are left so open to exploitation by energy suppliers.

"Ofgem's investigation into the industry must hold the suppliers to account over the very apparent lack of transparency and fairness in their dealings with business."

The investigation must also address the "serious flaws" in the way that energy companies deal with business users, he added.

Firms are more vulnerable to exploitation and unfair practices by energy companies and need more support for this reason, Mr Frost stated.

Last month, the Federation of Small Businesses claimed that larger firms exploit smaller ones by imposing unfair payment terms and invoice charges on them.

According to the body many companies do not speak out as they are worried they could lose contracts if they do so.ADNFCR-873-ID-18726019-ADNFCR
