Employers 'need to be educated on age discrimination'

Age discrimination still exists among employers despite recent changes to the law, according to one expert.

A spokesman for the Campaign Against Age Discrimination in Employment (CAADE) said that more needs to be done to educate employers regarding the skills of older workers.

Chairman and founder of CAADE Phillip Walker said changes in legislation do not necessarily lead to new ways of thinking.

"Prejudice can take a long time to change. Just because we got a law passed doesn't mean to say there's been a change of attitudes," he said.

He added that employers should be educated in what skills older employees have to offer.

"[Older employees are] more loyal, they've got more knowledge, more management skills; I could go on and on and on. In fact, there's no more reason really why they should employ an older person than a younger person."

A Study by Acas recently found that only 17 per cent of small and medium-sized businesses had implemented changes in response to the Employment & Equality Regulations introduced in October 2006.
