Call for tailored retention schemes

Small firms should tailor their staff retention policies to the needs of individual workers, it has been claimed.

According to the Size Does Not Fit All report, published by TalentDrain, managers should stop treating staff as if they are all the same and instead take into account the differences between employees.

Ron Eldrige and Anthony Miles, authors of the report, believe that managers should provide a "shopping list" of factors that inspire loyalty - such as career progression, salary and work-life balance - and then build a flexible scheme around these.

They said: "These are the factors that influence whether or not people will stay with an organisation but they vary from individual to individual. Employees can ... select the factors that will press the right buttons for them."

Yesterday, a survey by City and Guild found that being interested in their work is the reason most people cite for staying in their current job.
