Budget 'must help SMEs'

The government must show commitment to small firms in its pre-budget report, according to one industry body.

In news which might interest business insurance customers, the Forum of Private Business, has urged Alistair Darling to take notice of the needs of companies around the UK.

The body called for the government to stick to its commitment of monitoring banks' lending to small firms.

It also urged the chancellor to do something about the twin burdens of tax and regulation.

Phil Orford, chief executive of the FPB, said: "It is important that the correct measures are put in place to support both small firms and the economy as a whole."

A survey by the forum reveals that 74 per cent of small firms owners would like to see the 2009 budget include measures which would simplify or limit health and safety regulations.

Meanwhile the Federation of Small Businesses has called on companies to embrace the internet to boost sales during the economic downturn.ADNFCR-873-ID-18877403-ADNFCR
